Circa 1857, the year of the sinking of the S.S. Central America during a hurricane in September of that year. A ‘pinch’ was the amount of gold a barkeeper could pinch between two fingers in exchange for a shot of whiskey; the bigger the barkeep’s fingers, the more expensive your drink!
