Description
(1853) Reverse Damage. BG-209A. Liberty Head. Round. Rarity-8. Listed in the Breen-Gillio reference as unique! Deep honey-gold with soft underlying luster. The “Reverse Damage” amounts to some tiny pin scratches near the fraction. An extreme rarity in the Small Denomination California gold pantheon. Though not unique as once thought, this is perhaps just the third known example of this prized rarity. An example called MS-63 PCGS brought $33,600 in April, 2018 in a Heritage auction (Ex Lecce, Tothero, Sunshine collections), attesting to the rarity of the variety. We suspect there will be great bidding excitement when this rarity steps up for bidding.
