Description

Includes: Henry IV (1399-1413) Halfpenny, Heavy Coinage; and Charles I (1625-1649) Half Groat. King Charles I was beheaded at the order of Oliver Cromwell after the King’s troops lost control of the country to Cromwell’s “Roundhead” faction. Charles II, exiled in France, later returned to England and defeated Cromwell’s armies, and then placed Cromwell’s head, along with many others, on pikes at the main gates of entry to London. Cromwell’s body was buried, but years later exhumed and placed on yet another pike outside the gates. Gruesome history, that. (Total: 2 pieces)
